Ena Vermerris’ Vision Becomes a Reality at the Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chilliwack, BC – Nearly three years after the passing of beloved animal advocate Ena Vermerris, the Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven is proud to announce that her long-held vision for enhanced medical care at the Haven has become a reality.

The Society has secured the services of two Registered Veterinary Technologists (RVTs) to oversee and support the medical needs of the cats in its care, directly aligning with a goal Ena championed more than two decades ago.

Ena made a provision through a life insurance policy naming the Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven as beneficiary, with the intention that the proceeds support qualified veterinary care for the cats at the Haven. Her vision reflected a deep commitment to animal welfare and a desire to see professional medical oversight strengthened within the organization.

Ena’s resignation from the Safe Haven in 2014 meant that the Haven became the owner of the policy, paying all subsequent premiums. It also meant that we were not obligated to carry out her wishes; however, it was agreed that having staff with certified medical training on-site was an amazing goal, with significant benefits.

Following several months of restructuring and transition this year, the Society has renewed its focus on animal welfare, operational stability, and the long-term health of the cats in its care. The appointment of two Registered Veterinary Technologists (RVTs) marks a significant milestone in that commitment and represents the realization of a vision Ena advocated for many years ago, one that we’re glad was remembered.

The Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven is proud to honour Ena’s legacy by placing animal health and welfare at the forefront of its operations and ensuring that the cats who come through its doors receive the professional medical oversight, compassion, and care they deserve.

The Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven, located at 49843 Chilliwack Central Road, serves as a shelter and adoption centre for cats throughout the Fraser Valley.
